Let’s start with a clear and simple definition of self-censorship: it is the act of intentionally and voluntarily withholding information from others, and from yourself. This can be for a number of reasons, but it’s usually done out of fear or pressure- and it’s often used as a form of self-protection from actual or perceived emotional, physical, or occupational harm.
In a time where binary thinking, tribalism, and the desire to constantly prove our ‘goodness’ has rapidly taken over our modern lives and caused further division, confusion, frustration, and resentment - the urge to self-censor has never been stronger.
But are we truly free if we’re constantly afraid of exploring and expressing our own thoughts and ideas? Are we truly free if we are afraid to stand in our values?
