The Screwtape Letters by C.S Lewis

A slow, searching exploration of one of the most perceptive books of the modern age.

Starting: Wednesday 29th July 2026

Every last Weds of the month · 75 minutes · Two letters per session

I should start by letting you know that this won’t be a book club where we race through a new title every month. We are beginning with C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters and taking as long as the book requires. If it takes a year, it takes a year. I believe that some books are not meant to be consumed quickly. They are meant to be examined, questioned and returned to.

Written as a series of 31 letters from a senior demon to his nephew, The Screwtape Letters explores temptation, distraction, pride, fear, faith, self-deception and the subtle forces that shape human behaviour. Although written more than 80 years ago, I believe it reads like a prophetic text for the modern world.

In this FREE book club, we’ll get into the ‘why’ together. I CAN’T WAIT!

Let’s break ‘book club’ rules:

I have no idea what rules book clubs have anyway, so I’ve simply decided that this gathering will combine literary discussion, cultural analysis, personal reflection and an element of coaching at times.

I will bring my experience as a mentor, coach, speaker, researcher and writer into the room as we explore what each letter reveals about human behaviour, faith, modern culture and our own lives.

I won’t be lecturing you, and there won’t be an expectation or pressure for you to agree. You can expect lively discussion, uncomfortable questions and moments of recognition.

How it will work:

Each monthly session will last 75 minutes.

We will explore questions such as:

  • What is Lewis revealing about human nature?

  • Where do we see these patterns operating today?

  • How might they appear in our own relationships, choices, fears and convictions?

  • What are we being invited to notice about ourselves?

Why only two letters ?

Because depth requires time. We’re not trying to finish the book quickly. We are trying to understand it. As I mentioned earlier, there is no fixed completion date and no pressure to move on before the conversation is complete.

Who is this for?

This gathering is for thoughtful, curious people interested in faith, psychology, culture, human behaviour and personal responsibility. You may already be a Christian, returning to faith or simply curious. You do not need expert knowledge of the book or the Bible. You only need a willingness to think deeply, listen openly and engage honestly.
